For the first time since 2008, the UWS Volleyball team defeated the UW-Stout Blue Devils on the road. The game ended after going all five sets. Each set was played as if it was still a conference match-up.
All five sets were well-played and highly competitive from each team. The UWS defense looked solid and their offense aggressive. The scrappy play by both teams made for a great volleyball match-up. The ladies were fighting a battle point after point. Unfortunately the first set ended with a loss of 25-20.
The Jackets were looking to gain some momentum in the second set as this one was also a neck and neck match-up. Towards the end of the second set the ladies found their groove and tore away from the Blue Devils with a 25-17 victory.
Set two gave UWS a swagger that kept them the lead the entirety of set three. Their strong defense and aggressive hitters kept Stout in check. The ladies seemed unbeatable. With a small comeback coming from Stout towards the end, UWS was still able to put them away with a 25-19 win.
The last two sets were no joke, and were what seemed to be like an actual conference match-up of old. In set four, Stout wasn’t going without a fight. Point after point the score was even-sided. Both teams were playing at their full potential. Neither defense nor offense would falter. Stout took the fourth set 25-21.
The fifth and final set is played to 15. Emotions poured out from each team as the set continued. This again was even-sided. One might’ve guessed that this volleyball game was worth more than just a non-conference win. The final set came down to a 16-14 “win-by two” finish victory for UWS.
History was not to repeat itself. UWS beat UW-Stout on the road for the first time in eight years and it was a beauty to watch.
The UWS Volleyball team is now 7-16 overall and 2-3 in conference play. They still remain undefeated at home. The ladies play next on Fri, Oct. 14 at 7:00 p.m. at the Metz-Mortorelli Gymnasium in Superior.
